The Best Buys from Knit Picks’ Big Fall Sale

my favorite yarns from knit picks to buy during the $2/4/6 sale

The Best Yarns from Knit Picks

Knit Picks does 2 big sales a year – once in the summer and another in the fall.

Personally, I love the Fall sale because it’s the only time of the year that they offer the steepest discount with yarns for $2/4/6.

It’s a big discount!

Their best sale of the year.. and right in time for fall-winter knitting.

Here’s everything I’ve tried and loved from the brand, that I’d recommend picking up during the Big Sale.

The Knit Picks Big Sale

Knit Picks offers various sales all year long, but the best sale of the year, by far, is this Fall sale.

It’s actually not during Black Friday, but takes place a couple weeks earlier.

The dates vary every year (they run a sale for that, but not as good).

The Big Fall Sale is usually earlier, sometime during the first 2 weeks of November, before the Thanksgiving / Black Friday sales rush.

This year, the sale is quite short – just 3 days from November 3rd – 5th, 2026.

Things do sell out, so I’d recommend placing an order and not waiting.

What’s Included in the Sale – $2/4/6

The best reason to shop the sale is for the $2/4/6 yarns.

It’s available on a huge range of Knit Picks yarns, but it’s not a site wide sale.

Pretty much every yarn line is included, but the sale discount depends on the color way.

Meanwhile, their summer sale is site wide (so more flexibility with color) but the discount isn’t as steep. Tradeoffs!

I’ve noticed over the years that certain colors (usually the popular neutrals and pastels ha) sell out, and then take months to restock.

So if you had your eye on something, it’s best just to go ahead and order it during the sale.

For example, I really liked this palomino heather mohair – it has such pretty colors all blended together, but I didn’t have a specific project in mind for it.

So I held off in last year’s big Knit Picks sale, it sold out, and didn’t restock until this summer, months later!

My Favorite Knit Picks Yarns

I haven’t tried everything from the brand, but I’ve tried a lot!

Here are the Knit Picks yarns I really love, that I think are also unique from other publicly available yarn brands.

Samia

72% Cupro, 28% Mulberry Silk

knitting-a-summer-tank-with-knit-picks-samia-yarn

Samia is a silky blend of cupro and mulberry silk.

It’s fingering weight, so quite fine, and so silky and soft to the touch.

I recently used it to make this lacework knit top and I love how much drape it has!!

I’m including some photos of it in this post, and I have a video of the project here, where you can really see the drape and shine.

I’m obsessed with how the finished tank top turned out.

It’s so cooling and comfortable to wear, even on sticky humid summer days.

It feels like everyone uses Knitting for Olive Pure Silk for their summer garment projects. If you’ve been wanting to try something different, I think Knit Picks Samia is a great option.

It’s quite different – a bit thinner and finer, with much more drape and a bit of that silky glimmer to the finished fabric.

KTO Pure silk is a coarser, slightly thicker bourette silk, so they’re not interchangeable per se.

But, I think if you’ve been looking for a summer yarn that’s really beautiful and unique, Samia is a great option. I just wish the color range was wider.

I have to take some better photos of the finished Isabelle Top! These blurry sunset screenshots don’t do it justice, but it’s just the most beautiful fabric.

They used to have a pretty brown and two white/ off-white shades but those have been sold out and out of stock for a long time. I’m hoping they come back!

I used Chalk Dust for my tank project. It’s a hard color to describe… like a cool-toned, sea foam minty-green… with maybe a hint of blue and grey?

It’s such a unique color!

And I have Arctic and Abalone Shell in my cart for the Fall sale.

Palette

100% Peruvian Highland Wool

cone yarn on desk for hand knitting

One of Knit Picks’ most popular yarn lines is Palette.

It’s fingering weight and available in a huge range of colors as it’s designed especially for Fair Isle and color work projects.

I just started getting into colorwork and one thing I never realized is

  • a) how overwhelming it can be to have the full rainbow of colors to choose from and
  • b) how expensive colorwork projects can be!

When you’re knitting a Fair Isle project, you often need 10+ colors, but only a tiny bit of each color.

Still that means you have to buy 10+ balls plus whatever you’d need for the main color. So it can add up fast!

I recently got some Jamiesons for a Marie Wallin project I want to make but it was pricey at $10 per ball when I needed so many colors.

That’s why I love Knit Picks palette.

The yarn is reliable, soft and at full price, very reasonable already – which makes knitting Fair Isle more accessible.

But when it goes on sale?

It’s a great deal!!

In the past, I’ve spent hours trying to figure out which colors go together and hemmed and hawed over which to buy…

But when Palette goes on sale for $2 a ball, I can add 2 shades of a slightly different blue and not overly stress.

The best deal is on their cones.

I get these in neutral colors, so that they’re versatile for both the main color of a colorwork project but could also work for a simple all-over stockinette sweater.

And Knit Picks also sells Palette Value Packs (also included in the Big Fall Sale) where you can get a tonal range of color-matched hues.

Knit Picks Aloft

72% Kid Mohair / 28% Silk

base-yarn-held-with-mohair

Knit Picks’ mohair line is called Aloft.

It’s all the rage these days to knit with 2+ strands together, typically some kind of wool with a mohair.

Just look at any of the top selling patterns on Ravelry – chances are they call for mohair.

But, mohair can be itchy and expensive. Usually the softer mohair brands are also more expensive.

I think Knit Picks’ mohair strikes the perfect balance between softness and affordability, especially during the sale.

Many of the mohair yarns are on sale for $6 each, which is an incredible deal for mohair (typically ranging $14-20).

In some yarn lines, I think Knit Picks could better expand the color range… but not with Aloft!

I think the Aloft mohair colors are SO pretty – particularly their heather blends like ube heather, salsa heather, my aforementioned palomino heather and solar flare heather!

Knit Picks’ mohair is 72% super kid mohair and 28% silk.

I always look for ‘super kid’ mohair vs regular mohair as it’s much softer.

Out of all the yarns on the list, Aloft is the yarn that offers the best value during Knit Picks’ sale, simply because mohair can be quite pricey.

It’s up to 50% off during this (very short) 3 day sale.

Woodland

80% merino wool / 20% alpaca

I picked up Woodland in the undyed Bare color for a cabled sweater project and have been super happy with it.

It’s thick and super soft, with a very loose twist.

I’m really impressed by the weight and feel of my finished cardigan fabric.

It’s heavy and plush, while maintaining excellent stitch definition but also being so incredibly soft.

I’ll put some photos of my cardigan below, and you can also see the knitted fabric in this video.

I’d recommend Woodland for cable projects or anytime you want great stitch definition.

The 80/20 blend of merino and alpaca makes it a bit different from your standard 100% wool yarn, and on sale, it’s a good price!

Typically $14.49 a hank but up to 59% off during the Big Fall sale.

You tend to need a lot of yarn for cable projects, so getting this on sale helps!

Note: Since Woodland comes in hanks, you will need a ball winder and swift.

I have this excellent Stanwood ball winder (that I’ve reviewed here) but for a long time, I held off on buying a yarn swift.

I’m trying to reserve my knitting budget for yarn, ha, but after winding 11 balls of Woodland using my neck as ‘the swift’ I caved and got this gorgeous one from Knit Picks.

It’s made from natural hardwood and it’s so sturdy and beautifully made. I love the rich mahongy color and how much easier it makes the winding process.

Just a beautiful product that I don’t mind leaving out on my desk!

Wool of the Andes

100% Peruvian Highland Wool

And lastly, Wool of the Andes, or commonly abbreviated to WoTA.

This yarn line is another of Knit Picks’ most popular.

Like Palette, WoTA is already affordable at the regular price ($5/ ball) but a steal during the sale when it drops to $2 a ball.

This is a workhorse wool – made from 100% Peruvian highland wool.

Personally, I’ve learned over the years to decode certain yarn terms.

Workhorse? = not skin soft.

But there’s a time and place for every type of wool!

I used Wool of the Andes to make a throw blanket.

It’s double knit, and I made the full-size blanket so it required a lot of yarn… which can be cost prohibitive!

I think it was 11 balls of each color, or 22 balls total.

WOTA is excellent for big projects that will get a lot of daily use – so blankets or maybe an outer layer cardigan. I have quite sensitive skin so it’s not what I’d choose for a next-to-skin sweater.

Instead, think of WoTA as your solid everyday yarn: very affordable and excellent for big projects.

It comes in a great wide range of colors and thicknesses, ranging from sport to worsted!

Sometimes you want a mindless, simple stockinette project. That’s my double knit blanket – perfect for knitting while watching TV, chatting at a cafe or… on a sailing trip. I’m still working through the massive throw blanket but can’t wait to have it finished!
