Tips for Making Great Tasting Green Juice

Ingredients

I like the combination of kale and spinach, but if you want a sweeter green juice you can just use spinach.

For cucumbers, I’d recommend one large cucumber (like a skinny English cucumber) or two medium American cucumbers.

I use the full head of celery.

And for apples, I like to use 2 fuji apples because they have just the right amount of firmness and sweetness.

Don’t skip the ginger and lemon!

The spicyness of the ginger and the acidity of the lemon juice help to ‘brighten’ the chlorophyll taste of so many vegetables. They make the overall juice taste better.

Peel and Prep

I like to wash, peel and roughly chop all the ingredients.

You don’t have to peel, but I’m wary of pesticides and preservatives so I like to remove them.

Some people prefer to leave it in for the fiber.

Rough chopping helps to prevent wear and tear on the blades of your machine. I usually remove seeds, pith, etc so the overall juice doesn’t get any unnecessary bitterness.

Juicer vs Blender

I prefer using a juicer, because it makes better tasting juice, but a blender will work too.

I love my Hurom slow juicer – I got this one years ago and recently got a newer model for my mom because they make the best slow juicers.

I highly recommend a masticating juicer.

They work by slowly chewing up fruits and vegetables to exact as much liquid, vitamins and minerals as possible so you get a more nutritional and better tasting juice.

Buying organic vegetables gets expensive, especially at juice quantities, so I want to get all the vitamins and minerals out of them!

The reason why I like Hurom juicers in particular are because they work slowly, to prevent too much air foam and bubbles from getting into the juice.

They also extract all the liquid, leaving behind bone dry pulp.

I used to have a Breville centrifugal juicer and much prefer the Hurom masticating juicers.

The Hurom is much quieter, seems to extract a higher volume of juice, and leaves behind dryer pulp.

easy to clean and extra dry pulp!

You simply add all your vegetables to the top chamber and turn the machine on, and it does the work for you.

To make it easier on the blade, I like to peel and roughly chop everything. But, you could literally dump in a whole orange or lemon and the machine will masticate it all into juice.

It has an opening at the top so you can continue to add ingredients as it juices.

This model in particular is really easy to use and clean.

I’ve used two Hurom juicers and this newer version simplified the number of parts and streamlined the masticating blender portion, so there’s no longer a tiny mesh strainer that you have to scrub.

Now it takes longer for me to prep the vegetables than it does to make the juice and wash the juicer!

Strain to Remove Foam

Slow juicers process fruits and vegetables slowly, so that as little air as possible gets into the juice.

Still, there will be a small amount of foam.

I like to remove it by using a mesh strainer to separate the green juice from the foam.

I like to juice enough for a weekly batch, and store them in these glass bottles

Storage

I like to drink my green juice cold (I think it tastes better) so I usually pour everything in these glass jars and refrigerate to drink later.

Because there’s no preservatives or additives, the green juice will ‘settle’ in the fridge and slightly separate. Just shake it before serving and drink everything within 3-5 days.

Serve it cold over ice!

My go to formula for great tasting green juice.

Instructions

  1. Wash all the ingredients and roughly chop. I also like to peel the cucumbers, apples and ginger.
  2. Add everything (except the lemon) to a slow juicer and juice!
  3. Strain the green juice to remove any foam.
